Anerley is the district of south-east London that lies just to the south-east of Norwood. The name Anerley is believed to mean “alone” and was the name of a house that used to be situated in the district.
Like many other parts of outer London the area remained rural right up until the 19th century. Then once the railway reached the district in the 1840s the district was soon developed.
Houses were built and the area quickly became a popular residential district for the Victorian middle classes. Today Anerley is still a predominantly residential suburb with some of the Victorian architecture surviving to this day.
