England Made Me
All about England
The builder William Baker first laid out this world-famous street in 1755, hence the name. Throughout its history it has had numerous famous residents, for example the politician William Pitt the Younger and the actress Sarah Siddons.
But the street would probably never have been quite so well-known if it weren’t for its most famous resident of all – Sherlock Holmes.
Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective resided at 221b Baker Street. The address is now home to the Abbey National Building Society, but just a few doors away is the Sherlock Holmes Museum which, so as not to upset fans, also claims the number 221b.
