This famous Dogs Home was founded in 1860 when Mrs Mary Tealby first set up a temporary home for lost and stray dogs in Holloway in North London. The home was then moved to its present location in Battersea 1871, where it has remained ever since and where it has become known as Battersea Dogs Home.

The home is open daily, from 10.30am-4.15 Monday-Friday and from 10.30-3.15 at weekends.

The name is actually a little misleading, for since 1883, it has also been a home for lost and stray cats! The numbers of animals received at the home are staggering - as long ago as 1881 in excess of 15,000 dogs were taken in in a single year.

Over the years, Battersea Dogs Home has become, without doubt, the most famous animal shelter in the UK. And since 1884 the home has had Royal patronage - since 1956 Queen Elizabeth II has been patron.
