England Made Me

All about England

The Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre is located on Hurst Street, just to the south of New Street train station. It is well worth a visit for it is widely acclaimed to be one of the best theatres in the whole of Europe.

The Hippodrome was built in 1899, originally as a circus ring. But it was soon used to host all manner of other entertainments including variety theatre, drama and music recitals.

The original building was built in a Moorish style, however it was replace in 1963 with a new classical design, which still remains today.

In recent years the Birmingham Hippodrome has become most famous for being home to the acclaimed Birmingham Royal Ballet, one of the jewels of modern Birmingham.

However, the Hippodrome also hosts visiting theatre and dance companies and holds a variety of music and dance events throughout the year.
