Today there are nearly 30 bridges over the River Thames, making travel from one side of the Thames to the other effortless. However this has not always been the case….

Until 1749 the only bridge across the River Thames was between Southwark and The City, the location of present day London Bridge. Then in 1749 Westminster Bridge between Westminster and Lambeth was added.

By the end of the 18th century there were several other bridges, including Richmond Bridge, Putney Bridge and Battersea Bridge. And throughout the 19th and 20th century lots of other bridges have been built across the Thames, making travel around the city even easier.

Perhaps suprisingly London’s most famous bridge, Tower Bridge, only dates from 1894. But since then it has become one of London’s most famous landmarks.
