The Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673 by the Society of Apothecaries, which makes it the second oldest botanical garden in the UK, the oldest being one in Oxford. The aim of the garden was to study what was known as ‘physic art’ - the use of plants for medicinal purposes - hence the name.

As well as the range of interesting plants that you would expect in a botanical garden, this one contains the oldest olive tree in Britain and a rock garden that dates back to 1773.

The garden is open from April to October from 2pm-5pm on Wednesdays and 2pm-6pm on Sundays. During Chelsea Flower Show the garden is open from Monday to Friday noon-5pm.

The entrance to the gardens is on Swan Walk. Entry costs around or adults, refreshments are available.
