Deptford is the district of south-east London that lies on the south bank of the River Thames just west of Greenwich.

Originally the district was known as Depeford, derived from the deep ford that crossed the river here. Then for a while it was often referred to as West Greenwich and since 1965 it has been part of the borough of Lewisham.

Nevertheless Deptford is a distinct area of London in its own right, its roots lying in the fishing village that was once situated here. In the 16th century the water association of the district continued for Henry VIII founded his navy here.

Later on the Docklands of the east end of London influenced the area, and this can still be here today in the wharves and docks that date from that era.

The area was greatly developed from the 19th century onwards, become a typically industrial and working class residential district of south London.
