England Made Me

All about England

This is the place in London Docklands where pirates and mutineers were executed until the 19th Century. They were hanged down by the water’s edge, and left there until, according to an 18th century witness, “three tides had overflowed them’.

The most famous person to be executed here was the pirate-hunter turned pirate Captain Kidd who was hanged in 1701. People continued to be executed here as recently as the mid 19th Century.
