England Made Me
All about England
The first theatre to be built here was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1704. The first show to be performed was the opera The Loves of Ergasto and for the next 40 years it was the main venue for London operas.
Then in 1847 the theatre burnt down and so the Covent Garden Theatre, now the Royal Opera House, took over as London’s main opera venue.
Her Majesty’s Theatre was rebuilt but it was not as successful as before. It wasn’t until a third theatre was built on the site, the present building built in 1897, that Her Majesty’s Theatre became popular again.
Since then the theatre has gone from strength to strength with many successful shows being staged here. Most recently it was in this theatre that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hugely popular Phantom of the Opera was staged.
