Highbury is the district of north London just north of central London, next to Islington. In fact Highbury was originally one of the six manor houses that were located in Islington.

The manor house burned down in the Peasant’s Revolt, but the name Highbury has remained to this day for this part of London.

For much of its history Highbury was a rural area, best known for its dairy farms and clear spring water. And whilst there were several farms and a few manor houses, for a long time Highbury wasn’t very heavily populated.

The 18th century saw more houses being built, but it wasn’t until the 1820s that expansion of the district began on a large scale. It was only industrialisation and the arrival of the railway that led to Highbury becoming a heavily populated residential area.

Today it is still a predominantly residential, with some parts of Highbury being quite poor and run down. But for fans of Arsenal Football Club, Highbury is home - for this is where Arsenal’s Highbury stadium can be found.
