England Made Me
All about England
Pier Head, just across from the Albert Dock is the place to head for if you want to take part in that most Liverpudlian of activities - catching a Ferry ‘cross the Mersey.
Some monks from Birkenhead Priory established Liverpool’s very first ferry here in 1272, but of course it was Gerry and the Pacemakers who made the trip so famous in the 1960s.
From this point you can still “Ferry ‘cross the Mersey” to Birkenhead for some fantastic river views of Liverpool’s impressive skyline. In particular look our for the Royal Liver Building, one of the city’s most famous landmarks.
And whilst you are admiring the view it is worth remembering that this was the last view of England for some 9 million emigrants who left this point for the New World between 1830 and 1930.
