There has been a church on this site since at least the 11th century, although legend has it that the first church to be built here was built by a ferryman in the 7th century!

The present day Cathedral Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overie, better known as Southwark Cathedral, is believed to be the 4th church to be built here. It dates from the 13th century after the previous church was burnt down, although some traces of previous churches do remain.

Over the years the cathedral has been extensively re-built and added to. Most recently the cathedral was extensively renovated in the late 19th century, and so much of today’s cathedral dates from this time.

Nevertheless you can still see evidence of the mix of hundreds of years worth of styles and influences that shaped this cathedral. There are also lots of interesting monuments, sculptures and religious treasures housed here.

The cathedral is open to the public daily from 8am to 6pm. Admission is free, but a donation is requested.
