Number 4, Clarence Road, was the birthplace of the acclaimed composer Gustav Theodore Holst, who lived here between 1874 and 1882.

The Gustav Holst Birthplace Museum is open; from 10am to 4.30pm Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Today the house is a museum commemorating the composer, who is most famous for his work The Planets, which was written in 1918.

The museum contains all manner of Holst memorabilia including original manuscripts and the composer’s own piano.

But the house is also interesting as a well-preserved example of a Regency home in Cheltenham. With period furniture and furnishings, and even a working 19th century kitchen, you can really step back in time.

Also worth visiting are the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum and the Costume Museum at Pittville Pump Room.
