England Made Me
All about England
This elaborate theatre, situated to the west of Bath Abbey, has been famous since the 18th century, and it is well worth trying to see a show here.
The theatre was built in 1805, and within a few years Bath had become famous as the place to go to the theatre. As a result theatre companies performed here, writers wrote here, and plays were even set here.
The elaborate interior was a heady mix of plush velvet and silk in red and gold, with huge amounts of gold gilding everywhere.
By the early 20th century the theatre had become somewhat neglected, but then it was restored to its former glory in the early 1980s and it is now considered by many to be one of the most beautiful theatres in Britain.
Next door to the theatre is the house where Richard “Beau” Nash lived for the last 15 years of his life. Today the house is a restaurant called Popjoy’s, named after Beau’s mistress.
