England Made Me
All about England
Brighton has two piers - the West Pier and the Palace Pier.
The West Pier is the oldest, dating from 1866. It is a splendid example of Victorian architecture, but unfortunately it suffered bomb damage during the Second World War and fell into disuse.
Then in 1987 bad storms meant that the near end of the pier had to be demolished, leaving a rather sad tribute to yesteryear stranded out to sea.
Recent years have seen extensive plans to restore the pier to its former glory, an ambitious venture but one that is most welcome by Brighton residents.
Further along the seafront is the Palace Pier, built in 1899. Originally this pier had a superb Victorian theatre at the far end of it, but that has long since disappeared.
Today the Palace Pier is home to Brighton’s infamous Palace of Fun and the Pleasure Dome. This is where you will find the amusement arcades, candy stalls, fairground rides and games that are now synonymous with British seaside towns such as Brighton.
If you want to experience a truly British tradition, grab yourself a deckchair and munch on a stick of Brighton Rock! The Palace Pier is open daily, deckchairs are free.
It is worth noting that the Palace Pier is less hospitable at night, so you may want to avoid the area after dark.
