England Made Me
All about England
This West End theatre is located on Haymarket, opposite the more striking Her Majesty’s Theatre. It is officially called the Theatre Royal, but is also commonly referred to simply as the Haymarket Theatre.
The first theatre to be built on this site was built in 1720, but as it had no licence it was initially only used for amateur performances. For some years the theatre went through difficult times and was constantly closed and re-opened.
But in 1766 the theatre was granted an annual licence and soon it became one of London’s premier theatre venues. Since this time the Haymarket Theatre has maintained a reputation for quality shows.
The theatre was rebuilt in the 1820s and the present building dates from this time.
