Not to be confused with the close-by Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral is located to the south-east of Buckingham Palace just off Victoria Street.
It is presided over by the Archbishop of Westminster and is the headquarters of the Catholic Church in Britain. Eight masses are held each day during the week, whilst seven masses are held on Saturdays and Sundays.
Building started in 1903 and so this is often considered one of the last architectural achievements of the Victorian era. The outside is very picturesque, being a colourful mixture of Portland stone and red brick. The bell tower is 275 ft high and for around ou can get a lift to the top for some excellent views over Westminster.
The interior remains unfinished but there are lots of impressively large columns and the widest nave in Britain. And there are also some beautiful mosaics made from over 100 different kinds of marble and the famous sculpture by Eric Gill the Stations of the Cross.
The cathedral is open daily from 7am-7pm, entry is free.
