England Made Me

All about England

Halloween (traditionally called ‘all hallow’s eve’ or ‘all saints eve’) is an important date on the Catholic calendar , it’s a time to honor and observe saints.

Apparently, people used to think that on this night, all who died that year would return to the living to visit their families or friends and to seek living bodies to possess, so they could live again.

People would put out the fires in their houses so their homes wouldn’t be inviting and they dressed in ghoulish costumes to ‘blend in’ and to make the spirits think that they weren’t worth messing with at Halloween.

The tradition was actually brough to america in the 1840s from ireland and has become more ritualized since we’ve stopped believing so much in the supernatural.

So, there’s the history, where it all came from. it is an important day in religion, but not the traditional ‘halloween’ that we know. that was more created by corporate america to sell candy and costumes. but the underlying idea is based on beliefs from way back.
